Having a brand-new air conditioner for the start of a long, hot Louisiana summer is going to be wonderful. Your timing couldn’t be better. But when’s the last time you went through the process of having an air conditioner installed? It may have been many years. You might never have done this before! In that case, you’ll have some questions.

What are the steps in AC installation? How long will it take to get your old system out and your new one up and running? What can you do to prepare for your AC installation, so that it goes as quickly and smoothly as possible? We’ve got all the info you need right here.

What Are the Steps in the AC Installation Process?

Your installation begins before your appointment date, when your contractor determines whether anything additional needs to be done to make the installation possible. This could be something like having ductwork installed, if you’ve never had any in your home, or having old or damaged ductwork repaired or replaced.

On the day of the installation, your technicians will first assess the situation, and then communicate the installation plan to you. Then they’ll prepare the areas where they’ll be working. They’ll remove the indoor and outdoor units of your old system, get the new units in position and connected, and tidy up. Finally, they’ll get it running to make sure it’s working perfectly, and show you how to use it.

How Long Does AC Installation Take?

If it’s going to take more than a day to get your entire installation process finished, you will know that in advance. This can happen in situations like the one mentioned above, with major work on ducts being needed. Otherwise, plan on being available for the whole day, although the process might be finished in as little as four hours.

What Can You Do to Prepare for Your AC Installation?

It will be more likely that the installation process will be closer to that four-hour time frame if you prepare some things in advance. This can make fewer steps for your installers and streamline the process.

  • Clear a Path: This includes a path from where the truck should park to your door, from the door to where the indoor unit is located, and also from where the truck will be to the outdoor unit. Pick up anything on the ground, and move anything aside that can make more space for carrying the units through.
  • Clear the Indoor Work Area: Make sure the installers will have plenty of elbow room around where they’ll have to remove the existing indoor unit and connect the new one.
  • Clear the Outdoor Work Area: If trees, shrubs, or other plants have grown close to the old outdoor unit, trim them back. If there’s leaf litter or lawn trimmings around the unit, rake them away. This will make plenty of space for the installers to work, and it will also allow the necessary airflow for the new unit to work as well as possible.
  • Keep Your Pets Safe: Shut any animals in a safe room away from all the excitement, so they won’t get their paws stepped on, escape out an open door, or slow the process with their curiosity.
