Our Handy Furnace Installation Prep Checklist

Having a furnace installed is kind of a big deal. Congratulations! We’re sure you’ll be thrilled with just how toasty warm you’ll be all winter, and for many years to come. But while we are excited for you, furnace installation is not really that big a deal for us. It’s something we do every day! That means we’re in the perfect position to answer all your questions about how to prepare for your furnace installation. Here’s a checklist!

1: Schedule Your Appointment

Once you’ve chosen your new heating system, with the help of professional technicians who can ensure that it’s the right type and right size for your home, you’ll need to put that installation appointment on your calendar. If there are any additional considerations or work that needs to be done beforehand—duct installation, connecting to natural gas lines—your contractor will let you know.

If it’s a straightforward installation, swapping an old system out for a new, similar one, your appointment will be scheduled for one day. Will it take the entire day? No, perhaps not, but do make sure you’ll be available all day. Sometimes, a furnace replacement can take up to eight hours. Often, it’s less. Occasionally it’s as quick as four hours!

2: Prepare Your Space

When your installation techs arrive, their first order of business is preparing the area to make the installation go smoothly. The better prepared the space is before they get there, the quicker this process will be! Start outdoors. Where will the truck be parked? Which door will be easiest for moving the old furnace out and the new one in? Make sure there’s a clear path, with no rakes or rollerblades for anyone to trip over.

Indoors, clear a wide path from the door to the old furnace. Move furniture if necessary. And around the furnace, make sure there’s extra space, so the technicians will have elbow room during the process. You should keep a wide margin around your furnace anyway—at least five feet—to avoid the risk of house fire.

3: Jot Down Your Questions

Your installation techs are the perfect people to ask when you have any questions about your new furnace. How do you change the air filter? When will it need maintenance? What can you do to maximize efficiency? Jot down any questions you have. Once the furnace is installed, the techs will let it run for a few minutes to make sure all is well, and this is the perfect time for a conversation.

4: Protect Your Pets

We understand that your fur family members will probably be excited about having new people over and new smells coming into the home. But your installation will go more quickly, and your pets will be able to avoid hazards like open doors and feet near tails, if you keep them in a separate room.

Once you’ve done those things, you’re all ready! In just a matter of hours, your furnace installation in Sterlington, LA will be complete and you’ll be ready to relax in cozy comfort.
